18 photosHagia Sophia is one of the greatest masterpieces of Byzantine architecture and an enduring symbol of Istanbul. Completed in 537 AD, the cathedral served as the principal church of the Orthodox Christian world for nearly a thousand years. Following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, it was converted into a mosque. In 1934, Hagia Sophia was designated a museum, but in 2020, it once again became an active mosque. Today, beneath its magnificent dome, Christian and Islamic heritage intertwine in a remarkable harmony.
