The Research Institute for Biological Safety Problems (RIBSP) is one of Kazakhstan's leading scientific research institutions specialising in microbiology, virology, biotechnology, and biological safety. The Institute is part of the QazBioPharm holding company. Its primary focus is the development of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic products for human and veterinary medicine, including Kazakhstan's domestically developed COVID-19 vaccine, QazCovid-in (QazVac). The Institute is also responsible for maintaining and expanding the national repository of pathogens responsible for dangerous and particularly dangerous infectious diseases. Its research infrastructure includes laboratories operating at various biosafety levels, including Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) facilities.
