Israel Defense Forces 2.0
26 photosI used AI to enhance archival photographs taken during a reporting assignment in Israel in 2009. At the time, the Embassy of Kazakhstan, in coordination with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesperson's Unit, arranged a visit for our television crew to the Negev Desert, where artillery units were conducting military exercises. The unit was equipped with 155 mm M109A5 self-propelled howitzers. A military field camp had been established in the desert, where newly enlisted infantry recruits were also undergoing basic training. Compulsory military service in Israel lasts between two and three years, depending on the branch of service. Women serve alongside men. Interestingly, after completing their mandatory service, soldiers can sign contracts to remain in the military for several more years. The IDF offers a range of attractive benefits and incentives. For example, the military may fully cover the cost of distance-learning university education at an institution chosen by the service member. Such opportunities contribute to a high level of motivation among young Israelis to serve in the armed forces. Reservists, regardless of their civilian occupations, are also required to attend annual military training exercises lasting approximately one month. Remarkably, despite Israel's relatively small territory and population, its mobilization reserve exceeds one million people. Add to this a powerful domestic defense industry, nuclear weapons, and extensive military and technological support from the United States, and the result is one of the world's most powerful and combat-ready armed forces.
